Weiss passed away in April at the age of 76. He was a strong supporter of high school athletics in Western New York.

Let go of the puck The Williamsville North Tournament gets underway this Friday at 5 p.m. at Northtown Center, and the first game of the Western New York high school boys hockey season is a combined team from the Syracuse city schools versus Williamsville North. On Saturday at 1 p.m., the Syracuse squad will play host to Canisius, and on Sunday at the same time, Williamsville North will take on the same Canisius squad.
The Assumption of the Blessed Church, located at 435 Amherst St., is going to host a memorial service at 11 a.m. The passing of Michael, better known as “Coach Gabe,” was revealed by the school on Tuesday. Michael guided St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute to its first Manhattan Cup title since 2008 in the 2021 season, which was cut short due to the pandemic. The school defeated Bishop Timon in the finals, 78-67. After a long absence, the Marauders finally won the Monsignor Martin championship that year. Last year, they made it all the way to the Manhattan Cup finals as well. Every one of his five years with St. Joseph’s saw the team win 12 games or more. In addition to his time spent coaching at Canisius College and Medaille, he spent six years at the helm of the Williamsville South basketball program.
